Safety valves
Overview
Spirax Sarco safety valves protect steam, gas, air and liquid systems by providing a controlled discharge path when pressure rises above the safe limit of the equipment being protected. Typical overpressure causes include blocked outlets, regulator failure, cooling failure, power loss, fire and other upset conditions, so the valve should be treated as a primary protective device rather than an optional accessory. Safety valves are especially important downstream of pressure reducing stations, on pressure vessels and on heat transfer equipment where an upstream failure could otherwise expose the system to pressure beyond its design limit. Correct selection depends on fluid type, required relieving capacity, materials, discharge arrangement and the code framework that applies to the installation, not just on line size alone. Set pressure must stay within the maximum allowable pressure of the protected equipment while maintaining enough margin above normal operating pressure to avoid chatter, frequent lifting and premature seat wear. The Spirax Sarco range covers general industrial, stainless and clean-service duties, making this route a useful starting point for users who need reliable overpressure protection integrated into wider pressure control and process safety strategy.
Related overpressure-protection routes
Overpressure protection is often specified around a wider station design. Pair relief selection with pressure reducing valves when the protected equipment sits downstream of a regulator, and return to steam control systems when the safety device is only one part of the broader package.
For hygienic duties, compare clean service safety valves and related clean steam systems.
Continue your overpressure protection selection
Safety valve selection is usually connected to wider pressure control, equipment protection and compliance responsibilities across the system.
See the wider pressure control context
Return to the wider control systems range when safety valve selection is only one part of a broader pressure control or pressure reducing station project.
Coordinate relief with pressure control
Safety valves are often specified alongside pressure reducing stations to protect downstream equipment. Review pressure reducing valve duties here when both selections need to align.
Match sanitary process requirements
Use the clean steam range when overpressure protection also needs to meet hygienic or high-purity process expectations.
