CS10-1 Stainless Steel Clean Steam Separator

The Spirax Sarco CS10 clean steam separator, identified as CS10-1 in the technical information, is designed for clean and pure steam systems. Its purpose is to remove entrained moisture before the steam reaches a steriliser, autoclave, control valve, instrument or other hygienic point of use. Removing moisture at this stage helps the distribution system deliver drier, more consistent steam and reduces the risk that condensate will be carried into equipment that needs a stable steam condition.

This clean steam separator is intended for projects where steam quality, inspection access and material traceability must be considered together. It is a conditioning component rather than a clean steam generator or a particulate filter: the upstream source still has to produce the required steam, while filtration and condensate drainage should be selected separately where the process requires them.

Designed for hygienic inspection

A removable internal baffle is central to the CS10-1 design. It allows the separator to be inspected fully before installation and makes internal inspection of the system more practical during project verification. The body and the cover with baffle are fabricated from 1.4404/316L stainless steel. The standard internal surface finish is a maximum of 0.5 µm (20 µin) Ra, with welds ground and electropolished; the external surface is a maximum of 1.6 µm (63 µin) Ra with a satin bead-blast finish. These details matter when a hygienic installation needs a documented finish instead of an unqualified general-purpose vessel.

The component materials are also stated clearly in the technical information: the seal is Viton and the clamp is stainless steel, identified as AISI 316. This gives the project team a defined starting point for checking compatibility, cleaning requirements and the certificates that must accompany the order.

Sizing the Spirax Sarco CS10 for dry steam performance

The CS10-1 product literature describes steam dryness above 95%. That figure should be read together with the selection conditions rather than treated as an independent guarantee: separator size, steam pressure, mass flow, line internal diameter, velocity and pressure drop all influence the result. The technical sizing example states that a separator curve operating below 27 m/s will operate at near 100% efficiency, and it recommends selecting the best compromise between line size, velocity and pressure drop for the application.

For example, the metric sizing example in the technical sheet uses 500 kg/h at 6 bar g, selects a 2 inch (DN50) separator and indicates an approximate pressure drop of 0.012 bar. This is a worked example, not a universal capacity rating. A project should use its own operating pressure, flow and pipe standard when confirming the size.

Connections, limits and installation checks

Steam inlet and outlet sizes run from 1/2 inch to 2 inch. Sanitary clamp arrangements are documented for ASME BPE and DIN 32676 A and B dimensions, with other connection arrangements available on request. The technical sheet identifies a 1 inch drain and a 1/2 inch vent in the dimensional data. Confirm the sanitary clamp and gasket rating together with the final connection specification because the gasket or clamp can restrict the allowable pressure and temperature.

The body design condition is PN10. For saturated steam service, the maximum operating pressure is 7.6 bar g. The maximum allowable temperature is 250 °C, the minimum allowable temperature is -10 °C, and the minimum operating temperature is 0 °C. The stated maximum operating temperature is 250 °C at 6.8 bar g. These are selection boundaries, not a replacement for the pressure/temperature chart and the complete order review.

The CS10-1 is designed for horizontal lines. Before commissioning, check the flow arrow and the intended orientation, and handle the body and internals carefully so the specified surface finishes are not damaged. Planning should also allow access to the removable baffle and the withdrawal distance shown in the dimensional information.

Standards, certificates and order information

The product is designed in accordance with the ASME BPE guide and the technical sheet states compliance with the EU Pressure Equipment Directive and UK Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations. Polymers are stated to comply with FDA 21 CFR 177.2600; 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch and 1 inch sizes are available with USP Class VI. Depending on the project requirement, certificates can include EN 10204 3.1 material certification, certificates of conformity, passivation, welding and internal surface finish. These inspection and certification requirements need to be specified when the order is placed.

Before requesting a quotation for the Spirax Sarco CS10, confirm the CS10-1 size, steam pressure and flow, pipe standard, sanitary connection and gasket, drain and vent routing, horizontal installation space, required surface finish and the certificates needed for the quality file. When steam quality also depends on particulate control, review the CSF16 clean steam filter as a separate conditioning stage. When the project needs a dedicated source of clean steam before separation, compare the clean steam generator range with the complete system duty.

Description

The CS10-1 clean steam separator has been designed in full accordance with the ASME BPE guide to remove entrained moisture from clean and pure steam systems. A removable baffle plate allows the unit to be fully inspected before installation and facilitates system internal inspection.

Steam sizing example - kg/h, bar g and m/s

The example is based on imperial outside-diameter tubing delivering 500 kg/h of steam at 6 bar g.

  1. Plot point A where the steam pressure and flowrate cross, for example 6 bar g at 500 kg/h.
  2. Select the line size. A separator curve bisected by this line at a velocity below 27 m/s will operate at near 100% efficiency. The example selects a 2 inch (DN50) separator at point B.
  3. Determine velocity from the intersection and apply the correction factor for the pipe construction. The example gives 15 m/s before correction and 18.3 m/s after the 1.22 factor for 2 inch imperial O/D tubing.
  4. Read pressure drop from the chart. The example gives approximately 0.012 bar at point D.
  5. Select the separator as the best compromise between line size, velocity and pressure drop for the application.

The imperial example is based on imperial outside-diameter tubing delivering 1100 lb/h of steam at 87 psi g.

  1. Plot point A where the steam pressure and flowrate cross, for example 87 psi g at 1100 lb/h.
  2. Select a separator curve at a velocity below 27 m/s; the example selects a 2 inch (DN50) separator at point B.
  3. Determine velocity and apply the pipe correction factor. The example gives 49 ft/s before correction and 18.3 m/s after the 1.22 factor.
  4. Read the pressure drop at point D; the example gives approximately 0.17 psi.
  5. Select the best compromise between line size, velocity and pressure drop for the application.
