BT6-B balanced-pressure thermostatic steam trap
Overview
The Spirax Sarco BT6-B is a hygienic balanced-pressure thermostatic steam trap developed for pharmaceutical, biotechnology and food processing duties where cleanability, low condensate hold-up and steam quality integrity all matter. Its 316L stainless steel wetted construction, high internal surface quality and self-draining body design help support cleaner service use and reduce the microbiological risk associated with retained condensate. Balanced-pressure thermostatic operation allows the trap to discharge condensate close to steam saturation temperature, with product documentation emphasising minimal sub-cooling at lower pressures and hygienic condensate handling. Minimal condensate retention is particularly important in clean steam mains, sterile barriers, sterilisers, autoclaves, bioreactors and steam filter housings where stagnant condensate would compromise process quality or hygiene expectations. BT6-B is therefore positioned as a purpose-built hygienic drainage device rather than a general industrial trap adapted for clean service after the fact.
Why BT6-B is specified for hygienic drainage
BT6-B is designed for duties where condensate removal has to support cleanability as well as heat transfer. In these environments, retained condensate is not just an efficiency loss. It can also create hold-up points that work against sterile barrier performance, product quality or clean steam line hygiene.
Typical applications
- Clean steam main drainage
- Sterile barriers and block-and-bleed arrangements
- Steam filter housings
- Sterilisers, autoclaves and bioreactors
- Pharmaceutical and food processing utilities

Continue your hygienic trap selection
In hygienic steam systems, trap selection affects cleanability and condensate handling as much as it affects simple drainage performance.
See the wider hygienic steam system
Return to the wider clean steam range when trap selection is only one part of a broader hygienic steam system built around generation, venting, filtration and sanitary control.
Coordinate generation and drainage
Use clean steam generators when the same hygienic duty also depends on producing clean steam from purified or deionised water at the right quality level.
Coordinate drainage with hygienic air removal
Use sanitary air vent routes when the clean steam line also needs dedicated removal of non-condensable gases in addition to condensate drainage.
